Why it is free ›The physical bag and its printing process are their own technical decision, separate from branding or the commercial relationship — material choice and print method drive cost and lead time more than almost anything else.
Behind every private-label or OEM rice order sits a purely physical decision that shapes cost and lead time as much as anything commercial: what the bag is made of and how it is printed. This page covers that packaging and printing process on its own terms, separate from the branding and commercial-relationship questions covered on the own-brand and contract-packing pages, since a buyer sourcing custom printed bags specifically is often asking a narrower, more technical question.
| Material | Typical use case |
|---|---|
| BOPP laminated woven sack | Retail-facing packs (1–5kg); glossy, high-definition print, good shelf presentation |
| Vacuum-sealed pouch | Premium retail packs; extends shelf life, allows a striking flat-panel print area |
| PP woven sack, unlaminated print | Mid-range catering packs (10–25kg); simpler, cheaper printing, still legible branding |
| Plain jute or PP sack | Bulk institutional packs (25–50kg); minimal or no printing, cost-driven |
Flexographic printing uses flexible relief plates and suits shorter runs and simpler colour designs at a lower upfront tooling cost, making it the more common choice for a brand’s first order or for mid-volume catering-pack printing. Rotogravure printing uses engraved cylinders, delivers noticeably higher print quality and colour consistency at high volume, and is the standard for premium retail-facing BOPP packaging — but its engraved cylinders cost significantly more upfront than flexographic plates, which is the main reason it only becomes cost-effective at higher order volumes.

The practical minimum order quantity for a genuinely custom design is driven less by the rice itself and more by amortising the cost of the printing plates or cylinders across the order — a buyer ordering a small volume against a brand-new rotogravure cylinder will find the per-bag packaging cost disproportionately high compared with the same design run at full volume, which is why suppliers commonly quote a step-down in per-unit packaging cost once an order crosses a certain volume threshold specific to whichever print method was chosen.
Print-ready artwork should be supplied as vector files (AI or EPS) in CMYK colour mode with sufficient bleed around all edges, following the specific bag dieline template the chosen printer provides — a design built for screen (RGB, no bleed) routinely causes colour-matching problems and print delays when it reaches the production floor.
A first custom print run needs time for plate or cylinder preparation on top of the actual printing and bag conversion, typically adding meaningfully to the lead time compared with an unbranded stock bag. Repeat orders using the same, already-produced plates or cylinders run close to standard production lead times, which is one practical reason a brand owner benefits from planning a first order’s timeline generously and treating the plate or cylinder investment as a one-time setup cost rather than something to minimise on the very first run.
