Why it is free ›“OEM” and “private label” get used interchangeably, but they describe two different relationships — one is packaging an existing product under your name, the other is manufacturing to your own specification.
In the strictest sense, OEM — original equipment manufacturer, a term borrowed from industrial manufacturing but widely used in food sourcing too — describes a relationship where the buyer specifies an exact product formula or blend and the Indian supplier manufactures to that specification under the buyer’s brand, rather than simply packaging an existing product the supplier already makes. In practice on the basmati rice route, the line between OEM and simple private label blurs considerably, but the distinction is still worth understanding because it changes what a buyer should actually be asking their supplier for.
A buyer with a very specific product concept — a particular blend of grain lengths, a specific moisture or broken-grain target that differs from a supplier’s standard commercial grade, or a proprietary parboiling process — needs an OEM arrangement rather than simple private label, since the underlying rice itself needs to be produced or blended differently, not just packed differently. This matters most for buyers trying to differentiate on product characteristics rather than branding and packaging alone.
Not every exporter capable of private-label packing has genuine OEM manufacturing capability — blending to a custom specification requires production-line flexibility and quality-control discipline beyond simply filling bags with an existing grade. A buyer evaluating a potential OEM partner should expect to see evidence of BRC, ISO 22000 or HACCP certification, since these audit standards specifically test a facility’s ability to consistently reproduce a defined specification rather than just its general food-safety practices.
Because an OEM relationship often involves sharing a genuinely proprietary specification with the manufacturer, exclusivity and confidentiality terms matter more here than in a straightforward private-label packing order — a buyer investing in a custom blend has a real interest in the supplier not offering that same specification to a competing brand, which is worth addressing explicitly in the commercial agreement rather than assuming it is implied.
The simpler private-label packing process this page distinguishes from.

Private label packs the supplier's existing rice under a new brand. OEM means the supplier manufactures or blends to the buyer's own specification, which usually means a higher MOQ and longer lead time for the first production run.
BRC, ISO 22000 or HACCP certification, since these specifically test a facility's ability to consistently reproduce a defined specification rather than just general food-safety compliance.
