Why it is free ›Asking for FOB shifts freight risk onto the buyer’s own forwarder — and increasingly that is exactly what larger, established UAE buyers want.
FOB, Free On Board, means the exporter’s quoted price covers the rice only up to the point it is loaded onto the vessel at the named Indian port — everything after that, ocean freight, insurance, and clearance at the UAE end, is arranged and paid for by the buyer’s own freight forwarder. That shift matters more on the India–UAE lane than on many longer routes, because sailing times are short and freight rates on this particular corridor are genuinely competitive, which is a large part of why UAE buyers ask for FOB more often than Saudi buyers typically do on the longer Red Sea route.

| Loading onto the vessel | Yes, this is the cut-off point |
| Ocean freight to the UAE | No — arranged separately by the buyer's forwarder |
| Marine insurance | No — the buyer's responsibility once FOB is agreed |
Mundra and Kandla, both in Gujarat, sit closest to much of India’s basmati milling belt and are the default choice for many exporters quoting FOB to the UAE, offering short inland transport and frequent sailings on a well-served corridor. Nhava Sheva near Mumbai and Pipavav are the other regularly used options, chosen more often when a specific shipping line’s schedule or a mill’s own location makes one of them more practical — transit time differences between the main Gujarat ports and the UAE are usually measured in a day or two, not enough on their own to override where the freight rate or mill location actually points.
A larger, established UAE importer with its own standing freight-forwarder relationship can often secure a better ocean-freight rate on this lane than an exporter’s blanket CIF quote reflects, which is the practical reason FOB requests have grown on the UAE route specifically. It also gives the buyer direct control over routing and carrier choice, which matters more to a buyer running a tight, scheduled restocking cadence than to one placing an occasional spot order.

Freight rates on the India–UAE lane are competitive, and a larger buyer with its own forwarder relationship can often secure better freight terms than a supplier's CIF quote reflects, while also keeping control over routing and carrier choice.
