Why it is free ›“Bulk” is a specific volume threshold, not a vague adjective — the pricing conversation and the packaging both change once an order crosses from part-container to full container-load buying.
A 20ft container of bagged basmati rice carries close to 26 tonnes, and that figure is the practical dividing line most UAE buyers and exporters use when they talk about “bulk” — a buyer ordering by the container, or several containers a month on a standing contract, is bulk; a buyer asking for a pallet or a handful of sacks is not, regardless of how the RFQ is worded. Below that line, pricing is usually quoted and negotiated per kilogram; above it, the conversation shifts to landed cost per tonne, and buyers start comparing quotes on that basis rather than a retail-style per-unit price.
| Approximate volume | Typical buyer | How pricing is usually discussed |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 tonnes | Small shops, single restaurants, first trial orders | Per kilogram, often with a sample request first |
| 5–25 tonnes (part to full 20ft) | Wholesalers, distributors, mid-size caterers | Per kilogram or a landed price per tonne, depending on buyer |
| 26+ tonnes (full 20ft/40ft) | Established wholesalers, retail-group contracts, institutional caterers | Landed cost per tonne, CIF or FOB, usually on a standing contract |
| Multiple containers, monthly | National distributors, government-linked catering, re-export traders | Contracted annual or seasonal pricing, reviewed periodically |
Retail-pack rice — 1kg to 5kg consumer bags, often private label — is priced and handled entirely differently from bulk catering supply, which moves almost exclusively in plain 25kg or 50kg PP woven or jute sacks with no retail finishing at all. A small number of very large institutional buyers occasionally request one-tonne jumbo bags to cut handling labour, but sack-based bulk remains the overwhelming norm across the UAE’s catering and wholesale trade, since most receiving warehouses and kitchens are set up for sack handling rather than bulk-bag equipment.
A brand-new exporter rarely opens a UAE relationship at full contracted volume — most bulk buyers want a trial shipment, often a single container, to confirm grade consistency and reliability before committing to a standing monthly order. Treating that first container as a test the buyer is genuinely running, rather than as a one-off sale to be priced as thin as possible, is usually what converts a trial into a repeat contract.

In practice, close to a full 20ft container — around 26 tonnes — or more, either as a single shipment or as a standing monthly contract. Smaller orders are usually priced per kilogram rather than by landed cost per tonne.
Both appear regularly. Smaller and first-time bulk buyers often prefer CIF or CFR, since it keeps freight arrangement with a supplier who already has established shipping lines; larger buyers with their own freight contracts increasingly ask for FOB instead.
