Why it is free ›CIF is a specific, addable cost stack, not a single number a supplier quotes — knowing what is actually inside it is what lets a buyer compare two CIF offers honestly.
CIF stands for Cost, Insurance and Freight, and it means the seller’s quoted price already includes getting the container to the named UAE port and insuring it for the voyage — everything up to that point is the exporter’s responsibility and cost, bundled into one figure. It does not mean the buyer’s costs stop there: customs duty, VAT, port handling charges at destination and inland transport from the port to the buyer’s own warehouse are all separate, and a buyer comparing two CIF quotes needs to confirm both are actually quoting to the same destination port before treating the numbers as comparable.
| Cost component | Who bears it under CIF |
|---|---|
| Ex-mill or FOB base price | Exporter, built into the quoted figure |
| Inland transport to the Indian port | Exporter, included |
| Ocean freight to the named UAE port | Exporter, included — this is the variable that moves most with shipping rates |
| Marine insurance for the voyage | Exporter, included, typically at a minimum coverage level |
| Import customs duty | Buyer, not included in CIF |
| UAE VAT on the import | Buyer, not included in CIF |
| Port handling and clearance at destination | Buyer, not included in CIF |
| Inland transport from port to buyer's warehouse | Buyer, not included in CIF |
CFR, Cost and Freight, is identical to CIF except the insurance line is dropped — the buyer either self-insures or goes without cover for the voyage. The cost difference between the two is usually small relative to the overall shipment value, which is why many buyers simply default to asking for CIF rather than negotiating the insurance question separately, but a buyer self-insuring a large, repeat volume can sometimes secure better rates through their own broker than an exporter’s blanket policy offers.
Jebel Ali, Port Rashid, Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah port all appear as named CIF destinations depending on which emirate the buyer is based in, and freight cost genuinely differs between them — a quote naming one port is not automatically valid for another, since routing, port fees and even transit time vary. A buyer should always confirm the exact named port before comparing two suppliers’ CIF numbers side by side.

No — CIF covers the cost of the goods, insurance and freight to the named port only. Import customs duty, VAT, port handling and inland transport from the port to the buyer's warehouse are all separate costs the buyer bears after the container lands.
CFR is identical to CIF except it excludes marine insurance for the voyage — under CFR the buyer either self-insures or ships without cover, while CIF bundles a minimum insurance level into the exporter's quoted price.
