Pakistan imports nearly all the tea it drinks, and it drinks a great deal. The chapter is 1.5% of the country’s $56.5B imports and ranks 12th among its import chapters, far higher than for any other market in this ranking, which tells us the tea share of the $861.3M is substantial. That is an inference from the chapter’s weight and the country’s habits, not a measured split.
Only mineral fuels at $17.8B, electrical machinery at $6.2B and a few others rank above it.
Demand is for large volumes of black tea, much of it bought in bulk by blenders and packers who supply household, shop and catering channels, and often consumed with milk. Buyers watch price closely and compare origins for cost and liquor. Importers may also handle green tea, which is popular in some regions.
Ask the importer which grades sell best and how it prices against competing origins. Bulk buyers also compare tea by cup quality and colour, and often sample several lots side by side, so send representative samples and be consistent between sample and shipment.
Access to foreign currency and import conditions can change, and they affect when importers can pay. Confirm the present duty and licence position with the authorities and the buyer, and agree a payment instrument, such as a bank letter of credit with clear terms.
