The tariff does not know the word arabica. Coffee is classified by roasting and caffeine content in heading 0901, so an arabica lot and a robusta lot carry the same six digits.
| HS code (6-digit) | Official description |
|---|---|
| 0901.11 | Coffee; not roasted or decaffeinated |
| 0901.12 | Coffee; decaffeinated, not roasted |
| 0901.21 | Coffee; roasted, not decaffeinated |
| 0901.22 | Coffee; roasted, decaffeinated |
The first six digits are the same worldwide. Countries add their own further digits, and duty, licensing and statistics follow the national line, so confirm it in the destination tariff before quoting. Source: UN Comtrade HS nomenclature.
Heading 0901 has a two-by-two grid. Green, unroasted coffee that still has its caffeine is 090111. Unroasted but decaffeinated is 090112. Roasted with caffeine is 090121, and roasted and decaffeinated is 090122. Arabica beans travel under whichever cell matches their state.
Because the species is invisible at six digits, an analyst who wants arabica-only flows has to read the goods description, the origin and the quality grade in each record. Origin is a useful proxy: a lot from a highland origin known for arabica is a better guess than a lot from a robusta-heavy one, though blends exist.
The heading also covers coffee husks and skins at 090130, and coffee substitutes that contain coffee at 090140, with a residual line at 090190. These are not the bean. Chicory-based or cereal-based substitutes with no coffee in them fall outside the heading.
Instant and extracted coffee is a separate matter. Once the bean has been turned into an extract, essence or concentrate, it moves out of chapter 9 into the prepared-food chapters, so soluble coffee should never be declared under the beans codes. Roasted whole beans and ground coffee both remain in 090121.
For an exporter of green beans, 090111 is the search line. Filter by destination and read consignee names to see roasters, traders and importers. For a roaster shipping finished product, 090121 is the line, and the buyers are usually distributors and brand owners rather than green-coffee traders.
Certified lots, such as organic or specialty grade, do not get their own six-digit code, so the certificate and the invoice carry that information. Confirm the eight-digit national line and any import conditions with the destination customs authority before shipping.
Green, unroasted coffee that has not been decaffeinated goes under 090111. The code does not separate arabica from robusta, so species must be stated on the commercial documents.
Roasted beans move from 090111 to 090121, which covers roasted coffee that has not been decaffeinated. Ground roasted coffee also uses 090121, unless it has been decaffeinated, when it takes 090122.
No. Extracts and concentrates are prepared products and are classified outside heading 0901. Do not declare soluble coffee under the bean codes.
Not directly, because the six-digit lines ignore species. Combine the code with origin, description text and grade information in the shipment record to narrow toward arabica.
