Why it is free ›A Saudi retail listing lives or dies on the label before it ever reaches a price negotiation — SFDA’s bilingual, nutrition-panel and Halal-logo requirements apply regardless of grade or origin.
Saudi Arabia’s retail rice shelf runs on 1kg, 2kg and occasionally 5kg consumer packs, and every one of them has to clear the Saudi Food and Drug Authority’s labelling requirements before a supermarket buyer will even consider it for listing. Unlike a bulk catering sack, where the sack itself carries minimal information, a consumer pack is a compliance document as much as it is packaging — get the label wrong and the product does not clear, regardless of how competitive the price or how good the grain quality is.
| Label element | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Language | Arabic and English both, Arabic given primary/lead placement |
| Nutrition facts panel | Mandatory, bilingual, per SFDA technical regulation format |
| Halal logo | From a recognised certifying body, clearly printed |
| Country of origin | Must be stated clearly, not implied |
| Batch/lot code and production date | Traceability requirement, checked at import inspection |
| Best-before / shelf-life date | Must be substantiated, not an arbitrary figure |
Beyond the regulatory minimum, Saudi retail buyers themselves prefer — and sometimes require as a listing condition — that Arabic text leads the pack design rather than being a secondary translation squeezed onto a corner of an English-led layout. This is as much a consumer-trust signal as a compliance box to tick: a pack that reads as designed for the Saudi market rather than relabelled for it performs better on shelf with a Saudi household buyer.

1kg and 2kg packs dominate standard household purchasing and are what most supermarket and hypermarket chains list as their core range; 5kg packs appear more often through cooperative and value retail formats, or for larger households buying less frequently. A supplier should confirm which size range a specific Saudi retailer’s planogram actually calls for rather than assuming the full 1kg-2kg-5kg range is wanted across every account.
As with the UAE, a meaningful share of Saudi retail-pack volume ships as contract-packed private label under the distributor’s or retailer’s own brand rather than the exporter’s, particularly for the larger national distribution groups covered on the Saudi Arabia hub page. A first conversation with a new Saudi retail-facing buyer should establish early whether they want private-label packing or are open to the exporter’s own brand, since the artwork, certification paperwork and lead time differ meaningfully between the two paths.
