Why it is free ›Getting listed with a UAE supermarket group starts with getting the retail pack spec right — carton configuration, barcoding and bilingual labelling, before price is even discussed.
A 1kg or 2kg consumer pack is the format that actually reaches a UAE household shelf, and it is bought almost entirely by a small number of large retail groups running their own formal vendor-registration processes rather than by informal wholesale channels. LuLu Group, Carrefour (operated by Majid Al Futtaim), Union Coop, Choithrams and Spinneys between them run the largest share of modern-trade shelf space in the UAE, and a listing with any one of them can represent more steady volume than a dozen smaller wholesale accounts combined.
| Pack size | Common carton config | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1kg | 10 x 1kg per outer carton | Most common configuration for standard shelf listing |
| 2kg | 6 x 2kg per outer carton | Slightly heavier carton, still hand-liftable for shelf stocking |
| Mixed/promotional | Custom, per retailer's planogram | Some chains request bundled promotional packs seasonally |
Beyond the printed design, a listing-ready pack needs an EAN barcode registered to the correct product and pack size (a different barcode per size, not one code reused across 1kg and 2kg), a bilingual Arabic-English label carrying product name, net weight, country of origin, a Halal logo from a recognised certifying body, a batch or lot code, and a printed best-before date. Missing or incorrect barcode registration is one of the most common reasons a otherwise-approved product gets held up at a retailer’s warehouse intake stage rather than at customs.

A meaningful share of this volume ships under the retail group’s own private-label brand rather than the exporter’s — the pack design, brand name and sometimes even the barcode ownership belong to the retailer, with the exporter supplying the product and contract-packing to the retailer’s specification. A supplier should ask directly, early in a new relationship, whether a given retail account wants private-label packing or is open to carrying the exporter’s own brand, since the two require different artwork, MOQ and lead-time planning.
Getting listed with a major UAE retail group is a formal process rather than a quick negotiation — it typically involves submitting product specifications, certification documents (ESMA approval, Halal certificate), sample packs and sometimes a factory or facility audit before the first purchase order is issued. A new exporter should budget real lead time for this process rather than assuming a retail listing can move as quickly as a wholesale spot order.

Yes — each pack size (1kg, 2kg, etc.) needs its own registered EAN barcode; reusing one code across sizes is a common cause of a stalled listing.
