The table on this page ranks exporters by declared value, not by tonnes of paddy or milled grain. It also comes with a scope limit you should keep in mind: the figures cover the whole of HS chapter 10, which is cereals, so rice sits alongside wheat, maize, barley and oats in every number shown. Heading 1006 is the rice heading, but this ranking does not isolate it.
So treat the list as a map of the big cereal-selling economies in which rice is one line. A country that ranks high here may ship mostly other grains, and a strong rice specialist could sit lower than its real importance to rice buyers suggests. Use the ranking to decide which origins deserve a closer look, then drill into rice-specific shipment records.
The United States tops the table at $24.4B, more than double India in second place at $11.9B. After that the gaps close fast. Argentina is third at $10.1B, and Ukraine, Brazil and Canada all appear at $9.4B, so their order at ranks four to six is close to a tie and could flip with a small revision.
The lower half narrows too: Australia at $8.3B, France at $7.2B, Thailand at $6.5B, and Vietnam at $4.5B in tenth place. The ten together account for 72.3% of the ranked markets in the dataset, out of 96 markets. That is a concentrated supply base, but not a monopoly, because ranks two to nine sit within a fairly narrow band.
Each country reports its own trade, and the latest year available differs by market. Re-exports, where goods pass through a hub and are re-shipped, can inflate a trading centre. Late or revised filings can move a country up or down a place. Nothing here should be used as a market share claim without checking the underlying year and reporter.
If your interest is specifically rice, ask whether an origin is known for it at all, and whether the grain type you need is even grown there. Long grain, aromatic, parboiled and broken grades trade very differently, and one national total hides that.
For a buyer, the practical step is to shortlist three or four origins from this list, then search customs shipment records for rice under the heading to see named exporters, consignees, quantities and declared values. Compare origins on reliability and documentation, not only on position in the table.
For a seller, the list shows where you will meet the most competition. If you are outside the top ten, the data helps you pick markets where your origin can offer something the leaders do not, and the free marketplace on the site lets you post an offer that buyers can find directly.
