Why it is free ›“SFDA registered” gets used loosely in outreach messages. Here is what the registration actually covers, and the specific way a Saudi buyer checks it before trusting the claim.
Saudi Arabia’s Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) requires both the exporting facility and the specific food product to be registered before a shipment can clear customs. That sounds like one gate, but it is actually two separate registrations — a fact that a surprising number of first-time outreach messages get wrong by claiming “SFDA registered” when only the company, not the specific basmati rice product being offered, actually holds current registration.
A facility can be registered with SFDA as an approved food exporter in general, while a specific product — a particular grade, brand or packaging format of 1121 basmati — has never been separately registered under that facility. A Saudi buyer doing real due diligence checks both, because clearance depends on the product-level registration matching what is actually being shipped, not just the exporter’s general standing.
SFDA maintains a public system for checking registered facilities and products, and a serious Saudi importer will ask for the registration number directly and verify it rather than taking a supplier’s claim at face value — a mismatched or expired registration number is one of the fastest ways a promising deal falls apart at the contract stage rather than earlier, when it would have cost less.

| Requirement | What it covers |
|---|---|
| SFDA facility registration | The exporting company itself is approved to export food to Saudi Arabia |
| SFDA product registration | The specific basmati rice product/grade is separately listed |
| Halal certificate | A recognised certifying body confirms the product meets Halal requirements |
| APEDA registration (India side) | Confirms the exporter is authorised under India's agricultural export body |
| FSSAI licence (India side) | India's own food-safety authority licence, checked alongside SFDA |
An established Gulf importer who has shipped with a supplier for years may take registration status on trust because the relationship has a track record behind it. A first-time counterparty has no such history to lean on, which is exactly why registration verification tends to happen earlier and more rigorously in a new relationship — treat a buyer’s request to see the actual registration number as normal due diligence, not distrust.
Leading with a specific, verifiable registration number — rather than a general claim of being “SFDA registered” — is what separates an outreach message a serious Saudi buyer engages with from one that gets treated with the same scepticism as an unverified claim from any other new supplier. Pairing that with a shipment history the buyer can cross-check against their own knowledge of the market builds the same credibility a long relationship would, faster.

Two — the exporting facility and the specific food product are registered separately. A company can be registered while a particular product it offers is not yet separately listed.
By checking the registration number directly against SFDA's public system rather than relying on a supplier's stated claim, particularly in a new relationship.
