Why it is free ›Most restaurants never touch an import transaction directly — this page covers the realistic supply path from an exporter’s rice to an individual restaurant’s kitchen.
An individual restaurant’s rice order — even a busy one — rarely approaches container scale on its own, which means the realistic supply path for the large majority of Saudi restaurants runs through a local rice wholesaler rather than a direct import relationship. Understanding this path, rather than picturing a direct exporter-to-restaurant transaction, is the difference between a workable sourcing or sales strategy and a mismatched one.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Exporter to wholesaler | A full container clears customs, held at the wholesaler's warehouse |
| Wholesaler to restaurant | Broken into smaller lots, sold on regular reorder, often with credit |
| Restaurant kitchen | Rice used directly in menu items, no further resale |
A single restaurant’s typical order — a handful of 25kg or 50kg sacks at a time, reordered every few weeks — is far below the volume that makes a direct import relationship practical for either side: too small for an exporter to justify managing the account directly, and too small for the restaurant to absorb the cost and complexity of import documentation, customs clearance and freight itself. A local wholesaler exists specifically to absorb that mismatch.

A restaurant group operating many branches under central purchasing is the exception — consolidated ordering across dozens of locations can reach a volume that genuinely justifies either a dedicated distributor relationship with better negotiated terms, or in some larger cases, purchasing closer to source through an import-focused partner, rather than each branch buying independently through a local wholesaler the way an individual restaurant does.
Consistency and reliability of a specific grade matter more to a restaurant than the lowest available price, since many restaurants build signature dishes around one grade’s specific cooking behaviour — a wholesaler who can guarantee the same grade, batch after batch, tends to keep a restaurant account far longer than one competing purely on price and risking a substitution the kitchen would notice.
An exporter’s most useful contribution to the restaurant channel is not attempting to reach restaurants directly, but ensuring the wholesalers it supplies can themselves guarantee grade consistency — since that consistency is what those wholesalers are, in turn, selling to every restaurant account they hold.

Rarely in practice — individual restaurant order volumes are far below what makes a direct import relationship workable for either side; the realistic path runs through a local wholesaler.
