Why it is free ›“A UAE company” covers a wide range of real legal structures, from a large DED-licensed mainland trader to a free-zone entity with no food-import authority at all — worth telling apart before quoting.
An inquiry arriving from “a UAE company” is a wider category than it sounds. It could be a large, established DED-licensed mainland trading house, or a small one-person free-zone entity registered for a business activity with no relevance to food import at all. Confirming which one is actually asking is worth doing before spending time on a detailed response.
A Dubai mainland commercial trading licence, issued through the relevant Department of Economic Development, is the standard route for a company genuinely trading and distributing food within the UAE. A free-zone trade licence — issued by JAFZA, DMCC or another free-zone authority — covers a structurally different category of business, often oriented toward re-export and logistics rather than domestic distribution, explained in more depth on this site’s Jebel Ali page. Crucially, not every general “trading” licence, mainland or free zone, carries an activity classification covering foodstuff specifically, and a company without that classification cannot legally import food regardless of its stated interest.
A serious buyer will usually offer its trade licence number or company registration detail upfront, without being asked, and a straightforward request for it if it hasn’t been offered is a normal, unremarkable part of doing business on this route rather than an awkward one. An exporter’s own bank or freight forwarder handling documentary processing will also often flag an inconsistency in a buyer’s registration during the shipment process, which is a useful secondary check even after an initial response has already gone out.
A genuine, well-prepared UAE inquiry tends to state its trade licence number or company registration detail without prompting, specify whether the destination is local UAE sale or onward re-export, and name a specific grade and quantity rather than a generic request. An inquiry missing all of that is not automatically illegitimate, but it is worth a clarifying question before a detailed quote goes out.

No — the licence needs an activity classification covering foodstuff trading specifically, which not every general trading licence, mainland or free zone, carries.
Trade licence or registration detail, whether the shipment is for local sale or re-export, and a specific grade and quantity, rather than a generic, unqualified request.
