Why it is free ›ISO 22000 is a voluntary, internationally recognised food-safety management standard — not a legal requirement like APEDA or FSSAI — and it is usually what a modern retail buyer means by “certified quality” beyond the mandatory paperwork.
ISO 22000 is an international food-safety management system standard published by the International Organization for Standardization, built around the same hazard-analysis logic as HACCP but wrapped in a broader management-system framework covering communication across the supply chain, documented procedures, and continual improvement, similar in structure to ISO 9001 for quality management generally. Unlike APEDA registration or an FSSAI licence, it is entirely voluntary — no Indian law requires a basmati exporter to hold it — which is exactly why Gulf buyers treat it as a differentiator between suppliers rather than a baseline check.
An exporter’s facility is audited by an accredited third-party certification body against the ISO 22000 standard, covering documented food-safety procedures, hazard analysis specific to rice processing and storage, traceability systems, and management review processes. Certification is not a one-time event — it involves periodic surveillance audits to keep the certificate valid, which is part of why it functions as an ongoing quality signal rather than a static credential a company earns once and keeps forever regardless of what changes on the factory floor afterward.
Modern retail chains and larger institutional buyers across Saudi Arabia and the UAE increasingly build supplier-qualification checklists around recognised international standards rather than relying purely on their own inspection visits, and ISO 22000 is one of the standards that checklist commonly references alongside HACCP and BRC. Holding it does not guarantee a lower price or automatic acceptance, but its absence can be a real disqualifier for a buyer supplying a retail chain with its own formal vendor-approval process.

HACCP is the narrower hazard-analysis methodology ISO 22000 builds on top of — a facility can be HACCP-compliant without holding a full ISO 22000 certificate. BRC’s Global Standard for Food Safety, by contrast, is generally regarded as the most rigorous of the three, historically demanded more by UK and EU retailers but increasingly referenced by larger GCC private-label programmes too. A supplier holding all three signals a facility that has been independently audited from multiple angles, rather than relying on a single certification to cover the whole question.
Ask for the certificate itself, including the issuing certification body, the scope of certification (which facility and product category it actually covers — a certificate for a different product line at the same company group is not the same thing), and the current validity date, since a lapsed certificate that was never renewed after a surveillance audit failure is a meaningfully different situation from an active one.
| Standard | Focus | Typical Gulf buyer |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 22000 | Full food-safety management system | Retail chains, institutional buyers |
| HACCP | Hazard-analysis methodology specifically | Catering, tender-based procurement |
| BRC | Most rigorous, includes unannounced-audit option | Large retail, private-label programmes |
The hazard-analysis system many Gulf tenders now require directly.

No — it is voluntary, unlike APEDA registration or an FSSAI licence, but it is increasingly expected by modern retail chains and institutional buyers with formal vendor-approval checklists.
