Why it is free ›This channel means something specific: the network reaching thousands of small independent neighbourhood groceries — a different route to market than a supermarket chain’s centralised buying office.
Alongside the large supermarket and hypermarket chains, Saudi Arabia retains a dense network of small independent neighbourhood groceries — commonly called baqalas — and a grocery distributor is the company whose business is specifically reaching this fragmented channel, as opposed to negotiating a single centralised listing with a chain’s head-office buying team. The economics and the sales motion are almost opposite: one listing win at a supermarket chain can represent hundreds of stores at once, while reaching the same number of baqalas requires calling on hundreds of individual small business owners one at a time.
Modern retail chains have grown steadily in Saudi Arabia, but the independent grocery channel remains a genuine, substantial share of everyday food purchasing, particularly for staples bought in small, frequent top-up quantities rather than a large weekly shop — which describes a meaningful share of how rice actually gets bought by households who don’t stock a month’s supply at once. A rice brand or importer that only pursues supermarket chain listings is deliberately leaving this volume unaddressed.
| Element | How it differs from supermarket-chain selling |
|---|---|
| Sales motion | Route sales representatives calling on individual small stores |
| Order size per stop | Small, frequent, often a handful of bags per visit |
| Credit | Frequently extended informally, store by store |
| Decision maker | The individual shop owner, not a category management team |

Smaller consumer packs — 1kg, 2kg and 5kg — dominate the baqala channel, since these stores serve household top-up shopping rather than bulk buying, and shelf space per store is limited. White and raw grade tend to move fastest at this price-sensitive end of the retail market, though golden sella still appears where a neighbourhood’s customer base skews toward household cooking of biryani and similar dishes rather than everyday rice.
An exporter has essentially no direct path into the baqala channel — this is entirely a domestic distribution function, requiring the route sales infrastructure only a dedicated grocery distributor maintains. The practical route in is identifying which importers already supply a strong grocery-channel distributor, since that relationship is what ultimately puts product on a baqala’s shelf.

Yes — it remains a genuine, substantial share of everyday food purchasing, particularly for staples bought in small, frequent top-up quantities rather than a large weekly shop.
Not practically — this is a domestic route-sales function requiring a dedicated grocery distributor's infrastructure, reached in practice through an importer relationship.
