Why it is free ›Before pitching a company, it helps to know what actually makes it a legitimate Saudi food importer on paper — and how to check.
Being a real, legally operating food importer in Saudi Arabia requires clearing a specific regulatory sequence, and understanding it serves two purposes for an exporter: knowing what a genuine counterparty should be able to show, and being able to verify that a company claiming to be an importer actually is one before investing time in the relationship.
| Requirement | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Commercial Registration (CR) | Basic legal business registration, issued via the Ministry of Commerce |
| SFDA facility registration | Registers the specific business as a food-handling/import facility |
| SFDA product registration | Registers the specific imported product, not just the company |
| Import permit (per shipment or standing) | Authorises the actual customs clearance of a food shipment |
| Halal certification (on the product) | Required on essentially all food imports, checked at clearance |
A company without current SFDA registration cannot clear a food shipment regardless of how attractive its commercial terms sound, which makes basic licensing status a genuine, practical filter for a supplier evaluating a new counterparty — a promising-looking company that cannot actually demonstrate current registration is a real risk, not a minor paperwork detail to sort out later.

A Commercial Registration number can be checked against Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Commerce records, and a legitimate importer will generally provide this readily since it is public information rather than a trade secret. Asking directly for current SFDA registration details — and being willing to verify them — is a reasonable, normal step in qualifying a new counterparty rather than an unusual or distrustful request, and a company reluctant to share this information is itself worth treating with caution.
Many Saudi food importers work with a customs clearing agent to handle the actual filing and documentation at the port, which is a normal, expected part of the process rather than a sign the importer itself is not genuine — the distinction worth checking is whether the importer of record itself holds valid registration, not whether they personally handle every customs form, since that task is routinely outsourced even by large, established companies.
