The United Kingdom is above at $3.0B and Canada below at $2.6B. Turkey’s 2.0% share of reported world imports keeps it a step ahead of Canada. The chapter is 0.8% of its $344.0B imports and ranks 18th among its import chapters, a high place next to fuels at $65.6B, industrial machinery at $39.6B and vehicles at $31.7B.
Turkey has a sizeable refining and food-manufacturing sector, so a good part of its imports is likely to be crude oil that is refined, packed and sold domestically or exported to neighbours. Sunflower oil, from Black Sea neighbours, has long been a key part of regional trade, though the exact pattern in the $2.9B cannot be read from the chapter total.
Ask the buyer whether it refines in-house, what free fatty acid and moisture limits it applies and how it prefers cargoes to arrive. Refiners often test each parcel on discharge against the contract specification, so agree the sampling method and the independent inspector in advance to avoid disputes over results once the ship is alongside.
Importers can be sensitive to exchange-rate moves, and import conditions for staple foods can change. Discuss the currency of the contract and payment security openly, and confirm current duty and documentation rules with the authorities. China, the Russian Federation, Germany and Italy lead the overall source list, which covers all goods.
Chapter 15 also holds animal fats, so the $2.9B is broader than edible vegetable oil. National reporting and re-exports can shift a ranking.
