Spain is above at $5.8B and France below at $3.7B. Germany’s 3.7% share of reported world imports separates it clearly from the next market. The chapter is 0.4% of its $1.38T imports and ranks 47th among its import chapters, showing how much larger its machinery and vehicle trade is.
German demand for fats and oils comes from food manufacturers such as bakeries, margarine and confectionery makers, from retail, and from non-food uses including feed and energy. Not every oil is edible, and the chapter includes animal fats too. Ask the importer which products it deals in and what specification it needs.
Sustainability expectations can be strong in this market, especially for palm and other tropical oils. Retail customers of German food makers often pass requirements down the chain, so an importer may ask you for certificates and origin records long before it discusses price, and it helps to have these ready.
Traceability, due-diligence and labelling requirements for oils are set by the authorities and can change, so confirm the current position with them and the importer. China, the USA, the Netherlands and Poland lead Germany’s overall source list, which covers all goods and hints that some oil arrives through Dutch storage hubs.
The $5.4B covers the whole of HS chapter 15, so edible vegetable oils are a part. Re-exports through neighbouring hubs can distort a ranking.
